This is a mecca for climbers, geologists and walkers alike. The British 1953 Expedition for Mnt Everest trained in this location and resided at the Pen-y-Gwryd_Hotel at the east end of the pass. The Cromlech Boulders were saved from destruction in 1973 as part of a proposed road widening scheme, the protest lasted 6 years tirelessly campaigned by Climbers, Geologists, Conservationists and Walkers until they won and the boulders remain to this day.
